The Kano State organizers of the planned nationwide protest against bad governance have revealed their identities and outlined their demands. The group, led by Anas Adamu and comprising 13 civil society organizations under the aegis of the Northern Chapter of the Nigeria Patriotic Front Movement (NPFM), made this known at a press conference on Tuesday evening in Kano.
According to the group, their demands include reducing the pump price of petrol to between N160 and N200, reducing inflation on food, housing, and electricity, lowering interest rates, reducing the cost of governance, and ending insecurity in the country.
The organizers emphasized that their protest is peaceful and consistent with rights enshrined in the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended). They directed participants to refrain from carrying any form of weapon, harassing or engaging in violence, and looting people’s property.
In a communiqué, the group called on the people of Kano State and Nigeria at large to come out in their numbers on August 1 and exercise their human rights to freely protest against bad governance at all levels of government in the country. They also urged foreign imperial actors to stay out of their domestic affairs.
The group warned against intimidation by paid agents profiting from mass suffering, emphasizing that it is time for citizens to stamp their authority and ensure that those in power do not continue to take them for granted. They stated that the August 1 protest is just the first step and will continue whether or not those in power like it.
The group insisted that President Tinubu must listen to the voice of the people and change course now before it is too late.
