Russia blasts EU interference in Serbia’s cabinet decision as ‘shameless’ and ‘unacceptable’

On Thursday, April 3, Russia condemned the European Union’s request for Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Aleksandar Vulin to be excluded from the new Serbian cabinet.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called the EU’s demand a “gross” and “shameless” interference in Serbia’s internal affairs.

Zakharova’s comments came after EU Enlargement Commissioner Marta Kos said that Vulin should not be included in the new Serbian government. Speaking to RIA Novosti, Zakharova suggested that Serbia might consider joining the BRICS group of countries instead of pursuing EU membership.

“We see in the statements of the Euro-bureaucrats, and this is not the first time, a gross and shameless interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states,” Zakharova said. “We believe this is absolutely unacceptable.”

She emphasized that only the Serbian people have the right to decide the future of their country, adding that the Serbian government is responsible first and foremost to its citizens and voters. “Only the Serbian people can make decisions about the fate of their own country,” she stated.
