On Wednesday, December 11, 2024, the House of Representatives called for the immediate closure of illegal loan apps that criminals, known as “one chance” operatives, use to extort money from their victims.
The call came after a motion of urgent public importance was raised by Rep. Billy Osawaru during plenary. The lawmakers also urged the Nigeria Police, banks, and FinTech companies like Opay and MoniePoint to take swift action on cases related to “one chance” operations or kidnappings.
While moving the motion, Osawaru described the actions of “one chance” operatives as “heinous,” explaining that these criminals subject their victims to severe torture and empty their bank accounts. He added that, in many cases, the victims’ phone numbers and bank details are used to borrow money from illegal loan platforms, which leaves them with massive debts they are forced to repay.
Osawaru pointed out that banks often refuse to help victims until they provide a Police report. He stressed the urgent need for authorities to act on these issues to protect victims and prevent further harm.
The motion was adopted unanimously, and no debate was held.
