Real Madrid shuts down Xabi Alonso’s plea to keep Luka Modric

Real Madrid has reportedly declined incoming manager Xabi Alonso’s request to retain veteran midfielder Luka Modric at the club.

According to Spanish outlet Diario AS, Alonso advised the club that keeping Modric would be beneficial, but the management stood firm on letting the Croatian legend depart.

The 39-year-old Modric is set to play his final LaLiga match for Real Madrid on Saturday, May 25, when they face Real Sociedad in the season finale. His contract will officially conclude after Real Madrid’s FIFA Club World Cup campaign this summer.

Modric joined Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012 and has since enjoyed a glittering career, winning 28 trophies with the club, including six UEFA Champions League titles and four domestic league championships.

The 2018 Ballon d’Or winner has been widely celebrated by both current and former Real Madrid players, who have paid tribute to his remarkable contributions.

Despite leaving the Spanish giants, Modric is expected to continue his career on the international stage, aiming to represent Croatia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
