Putin congratulates Alex Ovechkin for breaking NHL goals record

On Monday, April 7, Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Alex Ovechkin after the hockey star became the NHL’s all-time top goal scorer.

Ovechkin scored his 895th career goal on Sunday during the Washington Capitals’ game against the New York Islanders, surpassing the legendary Wayne Gretzky.

Putin praised Ovechkin’s incredible achievement, calling it a moment for all Russians to celebrate. He said in a statement, “I congratulate you on your outstanding record. You have surpassed legendary masters in the number of goals scored in National Hockey League regular-season games.”

Putin continued, “Breaking Gretzky’s record has become not only your personal success but also a real celebration for fans in Russia and abroad.”

He also wished Ovechkin health, good fortune, and the spirit to continue reaching new heights in both sports and life.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that while Putin and Ovechkin had not spoken directly by phone, the president’s statement reflected how much he values Ovechkin’s incredible achievement.
