President Tinubu, others pay tribute to Late highlife icon Mike Ejeagha

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has led tributes in honour of legendary highlife musician and folklorist, Mike Ejeagha, who passed away on Friday at the age of 95.

In a statement released on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described Ejeagha as “one of Nigeria’s greatest folklorists, songwriters, and musicians in the Igbo language,” and extended condolences to his family, fans, and the nation at large.

“Mike Ejeagha used his music and distinctive storytelling style to preserve and project Igbo culture and customs, inspiring generations,” Tinubu said. He added that the late musician’s legacy underscores the enduring power of music to “revive, heal, and redirect energy towards worthy causes that help build our nation.”

Known for his rich infusion of folklore and proverbs into music, Mike Ejeagha’s contribution to the preservation of Igbo oral traditions earned him the nickname “Gentleman Mike.”

His death marks the end of an era in Nigerian highlife music and cultural storytelling, with tributes continuing to pour in from fans, musicians, and cultural institutions across the country.
