Police warn of possible coordinated attacks on schools, NYSC camps and worship centres

Security agencies have increased watch around schools, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camps, places of worship and other soft targets after intelligence of possible coordinated attacks.

A Nigeria Police Force alert to formations nationwide said the Department of Operations had information of “increased mobilisation of terrorist elements” that could coincide with resumption of the 2026/2027 academic year. The note went to zonal assistant inspectors-general, Mobile Police and specialist units, and all state commissioners, with copies to Force Headquarters departments.

Police said they had reports of armed movement from Katsina through Kaduna toward Plateau, and of suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) operatives and local collaborators studying possible targets. Commanders were told to raise patrols, access control and rapid response around schools, churches, mosques and camps, and to tighten borders and approach roads. Personnel were to report strange people, vehicles or objects through official channels.

Defence Headquarters said it was monitoring the situation, according to Maj. Gen. Michael Onoja. The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) said it had doubled its intelligence net. Spokesman Babafemi Afolabi said tactical work had stopped more than 100 attempted school attacks, urged parents to let children resume, and asked communities and private guards to pass on what they see.

Former Assistant Inspector-General Ali Amodu and former Department of State Services director Mike Ejiofor said alerts exist so citizens sit up, not so they panic, and that “see something, say something” still matters.

Ibrahim Nabayi of one National Parent Teacher Association of Nigeria (NAPTAN) faction said parents are scared. He wants the Safe School Initiative revived, technology to watch approaches to schools, and, in the worst belts, children moved to safer sites rather than left in porous compounds. He recalled school abductions in Oyo in May 2026 and the recent DSS caution to worship leaders in Osun.

An alert is a warning, not a confirmed strike. Its value is whether extra people appear at the gate tomorrow morning. Parents will judge the week by whether school runs stay ordinary. Agencies have now said the risk is real enough to write nationwide. The next test is visible cover at the places named—classrooms, camps and worship yards—not another circular that arrives after the bell.
