Peter Obi decries continued killings in Benue, Plateau, calls for urgent action

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the persistent violence and loss of lives in Benue, Plateau, and other parts of Nigeria, describing the situation as a grave failure of leadership and governance.

In a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Wednesday, Obi extended his condolences to the people of Benue following the latest round of attacks that have left many dead and displaced. He also praised the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oloyede, for relocating to Benue State along with key military officers, calling it a much-needed step toward restoring security in the region.

“Following my earlier remarks on the security situation in Benue State on May 28th, 2025, I would like to once again extend my heartfelt condolences to the good people of Benue State over the tragic and senseless killings that continue to plague their communities,” Obi said.

He lamented the “pain, anguish, and sorrow” endured by affected communities, describing the recurring violence as “not only heartbreaking but also a grave indictment of a nation that is repeatedly failing its own people.”

Obi pointed to recent incidents in Benue, Kogi, and Plateau states as evidence of a growing wave of insecurity and bloodshed, which he labeled as “intolerable.”

Commending the military’s latest deployment, he said: “This decision signals a welcome shift toward prioritizing the security of a region that has endured far too much bloodshed.”

Obi stressed that Nigeria must act decisively to protect its citizens, noting, “The security and survival of our people must be the foremost responsibility of any government that claims to be responsible and compassionate.”

He concluded with a message of solidarity and a call for justice: “My heart is with every grieving family in Benue and across Nigeria. I stand with you, not just in words, but in the call for urgent, deliberate, and comprehensive action. A safe Nigeria is POssible.”
