PDP governors urge Tinubu to review economic policies, criticize election irregularities

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum has called on President Bola Tinubu to reassess the macroeconomic and fiscal policies of his administration, citing widespread economic hardship across the nation. The governors made this appeal during a meeting in Jos, Plateau State, on Saturday, emphasizing the need for immediate action to improve the welfare of Nigerians.

“The forum empathizes with Nigerians who are groaning under the oppressive economic hardship hoisted on the nation by the policies and decisions of the APC-led Federal Government,” said Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, who chairs the forum.

The forum also condemned the conduct of the recent governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states, accusing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of manipulating results in favor of the All Progressives Congress (APC). The governors described the Edo election as a “rape of democracy,” alleging that the rightful winner, PDP candidate Asue Ighodalo, was denied victory.

Similarly, they accused the APC of vote-buying and result manipulation in Ondo State, calling on the judiciary to uphold the integrity of Nigeria’s democracy. “The forum calls on the judiciary to save Nigerian democracy and on the National Assembly to strengthen electoral laws to prevent institutional sabotage of the will of the people,” Mohammed stated.

Turning to internal party issues, the governors urged the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) to convene a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting by February 2025 to address the party’s lingering leadership crisis and engage critical stakeholders in finding solutions.

The meeting was attended by governors from Bauchi, Zamfara, Taraba, Adamawa, Oyo, and Plateau states, while deputy governors represented Delta and Enugu. Governors from Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Osun states were absent.
