PDP declines participation in Kano LG elections, claims process was undemocratic
Yusuf Ado Kibiya, the newly elected Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kano State, announced that the party did not participate in the recent local government elections due to concerns about the undemocratic nature of the electoral process.
During a press briefing at the NUJ Press Center in Kano, Kibiya stated, “There is no way local government elections under the kind of governments we operate in Nigeria, especially at the state level, would be free and fair.” He criticized the previous council election, labeling it “the worst in the history of local government elections” and pointing to issues such as the composition of the electoral body and the lack of transparency in the selling of forms and screening processes.
Kibiya emphasized that, given these circumstances, the PDP found no value in participating in an election that lacked integrity.
Looking ahead, he outlined his vision for the party’s future, which includes enhancing the democratic process by strengthening the internal framework of the PDP. “This will ensure that every voice is heard and every vote counts,” he explained, focusing on identifying and supporting credible leaders dedicated to public service.
To support these goals, Kibiya introduced a 10-Year Development Program aimed at engaging professionals from various fields to help implement the party’s objectives. He stressed that the program would be developed with input from the citizens of Kano State to accurately reflect their needs and aspirations.
Kibiya further pledged to create a platform for open discussion on the challenges facing the state, including issues of leadership, institutional relationships, and social, educational, and economic concerns. He stressed the importance of discipline and accountability within the party, aiming to foster an environment where excellence is not only encouraged but expected.
Inviting all citizens to join in this endeavor, Kibiya called for collective action to build a responsive and accountable government. “The time for change is now, and together we will succeed,” he asserted, highlighting the need for collaboration to achieve meaningful progress for Kano State.
