PDP crisis deepens as Board of Trustees meeting takes place in Abuja

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT) has kicked off an important meeting in Abuja on Wednesday, January 29, 2025. The party’s Acting National Chairman, Amb. Umar Damagum, is leading the discussions.

Among the key leaders present at the meeting are National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu, Senator Ben Obi, BoT Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara, Board Secretary Senator Ahmed Makarfi, former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu, and ex-Osun State Governor Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola.

The meeting was called as an emergency to tackle the ongoing leadership crisis in the party.

Amb. Damagum became the acting National Chairman after Senator Iyorchia Ayu was removed. However, there are growing calls within the party for Damagum to step down.

Earlier attempts to resolve the crisis during the 98th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on Thursday, April 18, 2024, didn’t lead to a solution. One major issue was a request from the North-Central region to appoint a permanent national chairman to replace Damagum and finish Ayu’s term, in line with the party’s zoning arrangement.

The 99th NEC meeting, initially set for Sunday, August 15, 2024, was meant to discuss and address these unresolved issues. However, the meeting was postponed multiple times, first to Thursday, October 24, 2024, then to Thursday, November 28, 2024, before it was canceled indefinitely.
