Pat Utomi calls for restructuring of Nigeria before 2027 elections

Political economist Professor Pat Utomi has called for a complete restructuring of Nigeria’s political and economic framework before the 2027 general election, arguing that it is essential for strengthening democracy in the country.

Utomi made the call during the June 12: Annual Democracy Day National Dialogue held in Ikeja on Thursday. The event, organised by the June 12 Pro-Democracy Movement of Nigeria, carried the theme: ‘Democracy Without a Democratic Constitution: Which Way for Nigeria?’

According to Utomi, Nigeria’s current system, particularly the 1999 Constitution, is a major impediment to democratic growth and economic progress.

“The agitation for total restructuring will stabilize and advance democracy in the country,” he said.
“This is because the present democracy is not the type of democracy Chief Abiola sacrificed his life for.”

He argued that the nation’s foundational structure needs a complete overhaul to align with the true spirit of democratic governance. He called on Nigerians to embrace restructuring as a necessary vehicle for national unity, development, and democratic deepening.

Utomi also noted that President Bola Tinubu has a unique opportunity to build public trust by responding to long-standing restructuring demands from ethnic and regional groups such as Afenifere and Ohanaeze.

He warned Nigerians to remain vigilant against threats to democracy, stressing the need to resist anti-democratic forces.

“Nigerians must guard democracy jealously,” he added.
