Palmer may leave if trophies aren’t won soon – Hamann warns Chelsea

On Thursday, January 23, 2025, former Liverpool star Didi Hamann expressed concern over the future of Cole Palmer at Chelsea, warning the club that failure to win major silverware could lead the young England international to seek a move away from Stamford Bridge.

Hamann, who played for Bayern Munich and Liverpool during his illustrious career, shared his thoughts on the matter, suggesting that Palmer could be tempted by top European clubs like Real Madrid or Bayern Munich. “Cole Palmer will be pleased to see that Chelsea are making progress because getting back into the Champions League was a minimum requirement from this season,” Hamann said.

However, Hamann believes Palmer may reconsider his future in two or three seasons if Chelsea fails to secure significant trophies. “In two or three seasons’ time, he might think about leaving if he hasn’t won a major trophy. He will want to be challenging at least, but at the moment he is committed to the club.”

He continued, “He has a healthy arrogance to his game and that could end up taking him to Real Madrid or Bayern Munich, it depends on what happens at Chelsea. I think what happens over the next 12 months will be key.”

Since joining Chelsea from Manchester City for a reported €47 million in the summer of 2023, Palmer has featured in 69 games, scoring 39 goals and providing 21 assists under the management of Mauricio Pochettino and Enzo Maresca. The 21-year-old’s contract with the Blues runs until the summer of 2033.
