Democracy is under threat in Nigeria — Prof. Osunbor warns, says ADC is on a rescue mission
Former Edo State Governor and newly appointed National Legal Adviser of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Professor Oserheimen Osunbor, has warned that democracy in Nigeria is at serious risk of collapse due to worsening governance and rising public frustration.
Speaking during his official handover ceremony in Abuja on Monday, where outgoing Legal Adviser Peter Oyewole formally passed the mantle to him, Osunbor described the ADC as a beacon of hope for Nigerians amid deepening economic hardship and political disillusionment.
“I believe that our democracy—and indeed the nation itself—is under serious threat of disintegration,” Osunbor declared.
“Nigerians are looking up to the ADC to provide a viable alternative to the APC-led government, which has governed with lies and deceit, plunging people deeper into poverty every day.”
The Professor of Law praised Oyewole for his leadership in ensuring due process during the ADC’s ongoing political coalition efforts, as well as managing various legal battles and coordinating pro bono legal support for the party.
He urged him to remain close to the party going forward, stating:
“We will rely on your institutional knowledge. Don’t feel distant from us.”
ADC’s vision: Restore hope, rescue democracy
Osunbor outlined the ADC’s mission to offer credible leadership and rebuild trust in democratic governance. He accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of mismanaging Nigeria’s resources and failing to prioritize the well-being of citizens.
“People are disillusioned across the country… Poverty is at an all-time high, and Nigerians are counting on the ADC to rescue the nation from this unfortunate state.”
He emphasized that the 2027 general elections represent a crucial opportunity for the ADC to rise as a genuine alternative:
“We are not just in this race to displace the APC, who currently govern as though they have conquered Nigerians. We are here to offer credible leadership.”
A message of accountability and reform
Calling for a people-centered government, Osunbor insisted that:
“The wealth and resources of Nigeria must benefit all Nigerians, not just a privileged few. Government should prioritise the welfare, well-being, and security of its citizens—areas that are severely lacking today.”
The ADC, he said, is prepared to take on the enormous responsibility that Nigerians expect, working not only to win elections but also to restore faith in governance and reverse the tide of suffering and disunity.
His remarks come as Nigeria continues to face economic pressure, rising insecurity, and political tension, with growing calls for reform and leadership that puts the people first.
