Osun to start paying new minimum wage from December
On Friday, November 29, the Osun State government announced that it will begin implementing the new National Minimum Wage of N75,554.28 for all categories of workers, including local government employees, starting December 1, 2024.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Kolapo Alimi, the decision followed extensive negotiations between the Osun State Government and the state’s organized labour. Alimi explained that the new wage structure was part of efforts to ensure a productive public service.
The statement also revealed that Governor Adeleke approved an improved pension package of N25,000 for all pensioners in the state, acknowledging the challenges faced by senior citizens.
“The gestures to both public service workers and pensioners reflect the top priority given to them in the Five Point Agenda of the Adeleke-led administration,” Alimi noted. This initiative aims to strengthen public service delivery and improve the wellbeing of workers and pensioners.
The government took various factors into account when determining the new minimum wage, including revenue availability, existing debt burdens, and the need for sustainable growth in Osun State.
The new wage will be effective from December 1, 2024, with one month’s arrears also to be paid. Alimi also mentioned that other salary structures within the public service would be addressed as needed.
The statement further urged all public servants, including local government workers, to reciprocate the government’s actions by working with renewed dedication and enthusiasm.
The officials who signed on behalf of the government were: Kazeem Akinleye (Chief of Staff to the Governor), Samuel Ayanleye Aina (Head of Service), Sola Ogungbile (Commissioner for Finance), and several other key figures in the state government. On the labour side, the signatories included Christopher Abimbola Arapasopo (Chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress, Osun), Bimbo Fasansi (Chairman of the Trade Union Congress, Osun), and Lasun Akindele (Chairman of the Joint Negotiation Council, Osun).
