Oluyede starts his role as Acting Chief of Army Staff
On Friday, November 1, Maj.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede officially became the Acting Chief of Army Staff, making history as the first officer to take on this role in the Nigerian Army.
President Bola Tinubu appointed Oluyede on Wednesday, October 30, while the current Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja, is on medical leave, recovering in an undisclosed hospital abroad.
During the ceremony, Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Gen. Christopher Musa noted that Oluyede’s appointment is an unusual event for the Armed Forces of Nigeria. He explained, “This is the first time we are having an Acting COAS because of the unique circumstances we face right now.”
Musa continued, “Our brother and friend went for a medical check-up, and we pray that he takes the necessary time to get better. The President and I met with the authorities and decided to appoint an Acting Chief of Army Staff with full power to lead the army until further notice.”
He emphasized the importance of continuing the army’s mission, saying, “With the challenges our country faces, it is wise for us to give full authority to the Acting Chief of Army Staff.”
The CDS mentioned that Oluyede’s appointment follows the guidelines outlined in the Armed Forces Act, ensuring a smooth transition of leadership.
In his response, Acting COAS Oluyede expressed his gratitude to President Tinubu for trusting him with this responsibility. He said, “This appointment allows Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja to focus on his health, and I am committed to leading the Army effectively.”
Oluyede asked for everyone’s support as they work together to improve security in the country, stating, “Let’s all pray for Lt.-Gen. TA Lagbaja’s speedy recovery and safe return. Together, we can make Nigeria a peaceful and prosperous place again.”
