Okpebholo to investigate Obaseki’s administration, promises transparency, fairness

On Tuesday, November 12, 2024, Monday Okpebholo, the newly sworn-in governor of Edo State, announced that his administration would launch a probe into the actions of his predecessor, Godwin Obaseki.

Okpebholo revealed that he would establish a panel of inquiry to investigate the refusal of Obaseki’s administration to swear in 14 elected lawmakers of the Edo State House of Assembly in 2019. These lawmakers, who were elected under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), were denied their inauguration during Obaseki’s tenure, sparking controversy and questions about the democratic process.

“I am setting up a panel of inquiry to investigate the remote causes of that incident to avoid future occurrence,” Okpebholo said in his inaugural speech. “On June 17, 2019, 14 elected members of the Edo State House of Assembly were denied inauguration into the 7th Assembly. It was a big blow to our democracy.”

The new governor emphasized the importance of a functioning legislative arm for a thriving democracy, stressing that his administration is committed to ensuring that such incidents do not happen again.

“Legislative bodies are key to upholding our democracy, and we will work closely with members of the State House of Assembly for the common good of the people,” Okpebholo added. “Together, we will strengthen our institutions and accelerate the development of Edo State.”

In addition to addressing the legislative issues, Okpebholo also expressed concern over the previous administration’s failure to swear in three judges recommended by the National Judicial Council. He directed the Chief Judge of Edo State, Justice Daniel Okungbowa, to review the matter and take necessary action to resolve the situation.

“The delay and refusal to swear in these judges is regrettable,” he stated. “I have instructed the Chief Judge to look into this matter and take prompt action.”

Okpebholo’s promises reflect his commitment to a transparent and accountable government, ensuring that justice and fairness guide the way forward for Edo State.
