Okpebholo clarifies Obi visit remarks, says safety—not politics—was priority

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has clarified his recent comments regarding Peter Obi’s visit to the state, emphasizing that his concerns were rooted in public safety and security protocols, not political motives.
Speaking on Tuesday during the commissioning of the refurbished New Edo Line Transport Company in Benin City, the governor said:
“My job is to protect lives, including those of all Edo people and visitors. As the Chief Security Officer of the state, it is only appropriate that I be informed when high-profile individuals visit. It’s not about politics—this is about safety.”
Okpebholo shared a personal account of losing a police escort officer during a poorly coordinated trip in the past, stressing the importance of proper communication to prevent such tragedies.
He also used the event to highlight the impact of President Bola Tinubu’s administration in supporting Edo’s transport sector, noting that the revamped New Edo Line is part of broader efforts to ease mobility and stimulate economic activity across the state.
The commissioning was attended by key dignitaries, including FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, and other stakeholders.
Backing Okpebholo’s comments, Wike said:
“When Mr. Obi visited me as Governor of Rivers State, he followed due process and obtained the necessary clearances. These protocols are not political—they are simply for the visitor’s own security.”
Wike also praised Okpebholo’s performance, stating:
“Even if the Supreme Court had ruled otherwise, your performance would speak for itself. You’ve shown your support for the President in action, not just in words. I’m here today to support you because of your dedication to service.”
He described the revival of New Edo Line as a practical solution to transportation and security challenges, especially for students and workers.
In his closing remarks, Governor Okpebholo thanked Edo residents for their continued support and vowed to remain focused on delivering impactful projects.
“My focus is on projects that will touch the lives of our people. We will not be distracted—especially not by social media noise,” he said.
