Notorious cult leader Wanemi Omubo killed by his own gang in Bayelsa power struggle

On Tuesday, May 6, Wanemi Omubo, the feared leader of the Bobos cult group, was shot dead in the Azikoro suburb of Yenagoa, Bayelsa State. Now, police have revealed a dramatic twist — he was murdered by his own gang members in a deadly internal fight over leadership.

Omubo, originally from Nembe, was not only the Bobos’ leader but also a Phase 2 beneficiary of the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP). His sudden killing sparked rumors of cult clashes with the rival Vikings group, or even a targeted hit by hired killers.

But on Monday, May 5, Bayelsa State Commissioner of Police, Francis Izu, told reporters that intelligence showed Wanemi was a victim of betrayal from within.

“95 per cent of intelligence available to the police showed that he died due to intra cult rivalry about leadership struggle,” Izu said.
“They took him out and made it look like inter cult rivalry in order to profit from his death.”

He added that Omubo had a history of criminal activity and had previously clashed with the police over illegal gun possession.

“It is on good authority that the deceased has been involved in nefarious activity… when you influence the release of a criminal off the hook, you are building a disastrous effect,” he warned.

Meanwhile, the police also announced the arrest of over nine suspects for crimes ranging from cultism and armed robbery to kidnapping and murder.

Some key arrests include:

  • Mohammed Adamu (50) and Adiamakubo Orubo (37), suspected in the disappearance of Ashiru Ishiaku (26) and his tricycle on April 29.

  • David Ngo (36), a member of the Island cult, accused of fatally stabbing Goodwill Ovuru on April 16 in Agudama Ekpetiama.

  • Monday Daniel (28), arrested in Onopa for a robbery involving four armed men who stole a Redmi phone worth N180,000 from a woman at her home.

  • Endurance Odambe Chinedu (24), caught on Sunday, May 4, in Agbia community with ten live cartridges. He confessed to being part of the Black Axe (Aye) cult group, and a battle axe, beret, and crusher were recovered during a search of his home.

Police say efforts are ongoing to end the wave of cult-related violence in Bayelsa.
