NNPP suspends Ondo governorship candidate and running mate over anti-party activities

On Tuesday, March 4, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) announced the suspension of its governorship candidate for the November 16, 2024 election in Ondo State, Olugbenga Edema, along with his running mate, Rotimi Adeyemi. The suspension, which is indefinite, also includes a party chieftain, Isreal Ayeni.

The decision was made during a meeting of the party’s State Working Committee (SWC) in Akure, the state capital. Pastor Peter Olagookun, the NNPP chairman in Ondo, explained that the suspension followed allegations of anti-party activities and violations of the party’s constitution.

Olagookun further stated that Edema had taken the party to court without first exhausting the internal dispute resolution mechanisms required by the party’s constitution. He emphasized that legal action was taken in the name of the party without consulting the appropriate stakeholders at both the state and national levels, a move that violates party procedures.

The suspension underscores the party’s commitment to upholding its rules and resolving internal conflicts in accordance with its established processes.
