NNPP crisis worsens as lawmaker Rurum rejects suspension

On Monday, February 24, 2025, Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, the lawmaker representing Rano, Kibiya, and Bunkure Federal Constituency, rejected his suspension from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Kano, calling it baseless and in violation of a court order.

In response to the suspension announced by Kano NNPP Chairman Hashim Sulaiman Dungurawa, Rurum stated that he and his allies have never been part of the faction that altered the party’s logo. He insisted that they belong to a separate NNPP faction, which uses the fruit and basket logo, and distanced themselves from the faction associated with the book logo.

“The world knows that since they changed the party’s logo, we have not been with them. We are in the NNPP with the fruit and basket logo, while they are with the book logo,” he said. Rurum also referenced a court judgment that dismissed the claims of the opposing faction, accusing the Kano NNPP leadership of disregarding court rulings. “What they did is contempt of court. They are not the legitimate party leaders,” he said.

Rurum linked the suspension to the recent wedding of Senator Kawu Sumaila’s daughter, which he claimed was attended by many notable Nigerians. He alleged that the party’s leadership, including its national leader Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, was invited but deliberately chose not to attend.

“The real issue upsetting them, which shouldn’t even be political, is the wedding of Senator Kawu Sumaila’s daughter. Many distinguished Nigerians attended, and Kwankwaso was invited, but they refused to come,” he stated.

Rurum dismissed the suspension as irrelevant, emphasizing that his faction remains independent. “Everyone knows we are on separate paths. In reality, they have only suspended themselves because we are not part of their group,” he concluded.
