NLC demands longer service years for all workers

On Thursday, May 1, during the lively May Day celebration at Eagle Square in Abuja, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, made a bold request: he wants all civil servants to be allowed to work until age 65 or for 40 years, just like teachers, judges, and health workers.

It is imperative to extend the revised retirement age of 65 years or 40 years of service currently enjoyed by teachers, health professionals, and judges to all public servants,” Ajaero said during his speech.

He also reminded the crowd that he’s determined to talk directly with President Bola Tinubu about making this change happen.

Right now, the rule allowing retirement at 65 years or after 40 years of service exists because of a law signed by former President Muhammadu Buhari, but it only applies to certain professions.

If the NLC’s demand is approved, it could mean a major shift for government workers across the country.
