Democracy still going strong, 26 years later
The National Assembly says Nigeria’s democracy is more stable than ever—marking 26 years without military interference since the country’s return to civil rule in 1999.
At an induction ceremony in Abuja for 785 newly recruited staff, the Clerk to the National Assembly (CNA), Kamoru Ogunlana, emphasized that this democratic stability has helped the legislature grow stronger, more efficient, and more connected to citizens.
“This is more than just a job”
Addressing the new recruits (via Deputy Clerk, Engineer Bashir Yero), Ogunlana said working at the National Assembly isn’t just about qualifications—it’s a calling.
“You’re joining at a defining time,” he said, calling for professionalism, discipline, and a commitment to public service. He also urged staff to stay current with technology and legislative procedures while upholding strong ethical values.
Support, not just expectations
Ogunlana reassured new employees that their welfare is a priority. Salaries are being paid on time, and their 28-day relocation allowances have already been processed.
He reminded the recruits that the National Assembly is the heart of Nigeria’s democratic system—and their contributions will help shape its future.
Recent moves to boost staff morale
Just last week, the CNA also addressed over 3,000 legislative aides to federal lawmakers, promising job security and better pay as part of wider efforts to strengthen the Assembly’s workforce.
