Nigerian police launch swift disciplinary action after viral ₦5,000 extortion video sparks outrage

In a firm response to growing public outrage, the Nigeria Police Force has initiated disciplinary proceedings against six officers, including a Chief Superintendent of Police, over a viral video showing motorists allegedly coerced into paying ₦5,000 or providing fuel at a checkpoint along the Benin bypass.

The scandal, which quickly gained traction on social media, ignited widespread condemnation and raised fresh concerns about police corruption and abuse of power.

On Tuesday, May 27, the implicated officers were summoned to Force Headquarters in Abuja, where they faced the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, who did not mince words in his condemnation.

“Their actions are shameful, distasteful, and utterly unacceptable,” the IGP stated, ordering immediate disciplinary action.

Formal proceedings underway

The Police Force confirmed that all six officers have been formally queried, with orderly room trials already in progress for the Inspectors directly captured in the viral footage.

This internal disciplinary mechanism allows for a formal hearing to assess the conduct of officers and determine appropriate sanctions, which could range from suspensions to dismissal, depending on the findings.

“This swift action underscores our commitment to professionalism, integrity, and accountability,” the Force said in an official statement.

Public accountability emphasized

Reiterating its zero-tolerance policy on extortion and misconduct, the Force urged Nigerians to continue reporting unethical behavior and assured that every complaint will be addressed with seriousness and transparency.

“We want the public to know that misconduct will not be tolerated. The integrity of the Nigeria Police Force must be preserved,” the statement added.
