Nigerian designer Liz Sanya sets new Guinness World Record for largest sandal
British-Nigerian shoe designer Liz Sanya successfully completed her attempt to set a Guinness World Record (GWR) for the world’s largest sandal, a feat she began on January 2, 2025 and completed two days later.
The gigantic pink clog, which was built in just 72 hours, measures an impressive 3.156 metres (10ft 4.2 inches) in width and 8.147 metres (26 feet 8.8 inches) in length. The record-breaking creation was constructed at Pixel Park in Lekki, Lagos, and drew in several celebrities, including Pheelz, Mayorkun, Korty EO, and P.Prime.
The previous record for the world’s largest sandal was held by a group of artisans from Municipio De Sahauyo, with a sandal measuring 7.45 metres (24 feet 5.31 inches) long and 3.09 metres (10 feet 1.65 inches) wide.
In an emotional statement, Sanya expressed her deep gratitude to her supporters, sharing her personal connection to Nigeria as the reason she chose to attempt the record there. “I’ll never be able to put into words what any of this means to me,” she said. “None of this has been possible without the support and compassion of the people who believe in my vision. Ibadan is where I was born. Lagos is where I was inspired. It was only right to come back home and prove it. One world record to beat, within 72hrs.”
