Niger State Governor Bago presents N1.56 trillion 2025 budget for growth and food security
On Thursday, December 12, 2024, Niger State Governor Mohammed Umar Bago presented a proposed budget of N1,558,887,565,358 for 2025, known as the “Budget of Hope, Sustainability, and Food Security.” The governor emphasized that the budget is designed to further accelerate the state’s socio-economic development.
“This budget is to reinforce the strides already achieved, which is why it’s called the ‘Budget of Hope for Sustainability and Food Security.’ This title reflects our deliberate focus on ensuring a sustainable and secure future for all Nigerlites,” Governor Bago stated during the presentation to the State House of Assembly.
The 2025 budget represents a 48.32% increase over the 2024 budget. The governor revealed that the budget consists of N196,335,361,443 (13%) for recurrent expenditure and N1,362,552,203,915 (87%) for capital expenditure.
The total projected revenue for the year includes statutory allocations, value-added tax, other federal receipts, internally generated revenue (IGR), and capital receipts, with a significant portion coming from loans and grants. The capital receipts total N933,558,767,956, made up of N493,496,681,728 in loans and N440,062,086,228 in grants.
Governor Bago also noted that the budget aligns with the state’s Economic and Fiscal Update (EFU), Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP), and the 2025–2027 Budget Statement (BPS), ensuring consistency with the state’s long-term goals.
In response, Speaker of the House, Barrister Sarkindaji, praised the governor for his administration’s prudent use of funds and its efforts to improve the lives of the state’s citizens. He assured the governor that the House members would thoroughly review the budget and work towards its swift passage.
