Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan: Senate should be treated with respect – First Lady

On Thursday, March 6, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu shared her thoughts on the ongoing controversy in the Senate, stressing that the chamber should be a place of respect and dignity, not conflict.

Her comments came in response to the serious sexual harassment allegations made by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central) against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

In a statement released by her spokesperson, Bukola Kukoyi, on X (formerly Twitter), the First Lady emphasized the importance of preserving the Senate’s honor.

“I know with what is going on in the Senate, you may ask why I haven’t taken a position. I believe that the Senate is doing what is necessary, as that’s their role,” she said.

“We shouldn’t be hearing things like this. The Senate is a mature chamber, and it should be treated with respect. It is an honor to even be there.”

Reflecting on her own time in the Senate, she added, “I was there for 12 years, even when I was younger. People compliment you all the time, and it’s a privilege to serve.”

Ahead of International Women’s Day, Tinubu also encouraged Nigerian women to take charge in leadership positions and not let anyone undermine them.

“Women, lift yourself up. Don’t let men talk to you in any way they like. You can always shut them down before they start,” she advised.

She praised the progress women have made in leadership roles, mentioning figures like Zuriel Oduwole, a peace advocate, as an inspiration. Tinubu also commended Nigerian youth for their potential and encouraged women to continue striving for excellence.
