Military won’t allow anarchy in Nigeria, warns Major General Edward Buba
The Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, has warned that the military will not allow anarchy to befall Nigeria, amidst plans for a nationwide protest against economic hardship.
At a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, General Buba hinted that organizers of the planned protest intend to replicate the recent protest-turn-anarchy demonstration in Kenya, which was marred by violence.
While acknowledging citizens’ rights to express their grievances, General Buba emphasized that the military will not condone any form of violent gatherings or protests.
“The military will not allow anarchy to befall Nigeria,” General Buba warned. “We will ensure that citizens’ rights to peaceful assembly are protected, but we will not tolerate any form of violence or destruction of property.”
The planned protest, scheduled for August, aims to draw attention to Nigeria’s economic crisis, including inflation, petrol subsidy removal, and forex unification. However, the military’s warning suggests that any attempt to turn the protest into anarchy will be met with firm resistance.
