Military dismantles Turji’s network, kills 7 commanders and 24 bandits

Troops from Operation Fansan Yamma have successfully neutralized 24 bandits, including seven high-ranking commanders from the infamous Bello Turji gang, during a week-long offensive targeting banditry in the North West.

The operation, carried out by Special Forces from the Nigerian Army’s 1 Brigade and the Nigerian Navy Special Boat Services, focused on destroying bandit hideouts in Sokoto State. On January 22, 2025, the military targeted Gebe village in Isa Local Government Area, where the operation proved successful.

The offensive, which included airstrikes and intelligence-driven raids, targeted bandit strongholds in Shinkafi and Isa LGAs, areas notorious for harboring criminals. Key commanders eliminated during the operation included Abu Dan Shehu, Jabbi Dogo, Dan Kane, Basiru Yellow, Kabiru Gebe, Bello Buba, and Dan Inna Kahon Saniya, also known as Yafi Bahaushe. These individuals played significant roles in coordinating attacks and facilitating logistics for Turji’s gang.

In addition to eliminating top commanders, the operation resulted in the seizure of weapons, ammunition, and motorcycles used in criminal activities. The ongoing offensive comes as the Nigerian Armed Forces intensify efforts to combat rising banditry and violence, particularly in Zamfara, Sokoto, Katsina, and Birnin Kebbi states.

The recent successes against Turji’s network, including the killing of key commanders and the destruction of critical hideouts, mark a significant blow to the gang. It is also reported that Turji’s loyalists have begun relocating injured fighters, while Turji himself is believed to have fled to Maradun LGA.

This latest development underscores the military’s pressure on Turji’s network, which is beginning to show signs of collapse. Additionally, key allies like Abu Radde and Umar Black have surrendered, further isolating Turji and his group.

While Turji’s network is severely weakened, experts warn that sustained military pressure is necessary for complete eradication. Continued intelligence operations and targeted actions against Turji’s associates are key to dismantling the remaining elements of his gang. A focused strategy to neutralize collaborators and disrupt the group’s logistics could be the final blow to Turji’s operations.
