Lyon relegated from Ligue 1 over €500 million debts

Lyon, the former French champions, have been relegated from Ligue 1 due to mounting debts exceeding €500 million.

The club appeared before the National Management Control Directorate (DNCG), alongside several other top-flight teams, to answer questions about their financial status.

Following the review, the DNCG ruled that Lyon must drop to Ligue 2.

Last year, Lyon reported debts of around €500 million (£418 million). In an effort to improve their financial standing, the club’s owners, Eagle Football Group, activated several financial measures, including selling John Textor’s stake in Crystal Palace and offloading Lyon’s women’s team. Despite these actions, the DNCG found the club’s finances still did not meet the required standards.

Lyon now has the option to appeal the decision. Should the ruling be upheld, the club will compete in Ligue 2 for the 2025–26 season.
