Real Madrid wants to extend backup goalkeeper Lunin

The Real Madrid hierarchy is opening contract negotiations for backup goalkeeper Andriy Lunin, whose current deal expires in June 2025.

Madrid clearly still wants to keep the Ukraine international around, even though they still have Chelsea’s goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga on their books.

Lunin has been Real Madrid’s starting goalkeeper in the absence of No. 1 Thibaut Courtois who was out with an ACL injury since the beginning of the season.

Recall that recently, Courtois underwent surgery for an injury to his meniscus, an injury he got shortly after returning to training from his ACL injury.

This further setback of Courtois’s injury could be the driving factor in the bid to renew Lunin’s contract.

Lunin getting extended might also be the confirmation that Madrid doesn’t plan to keep Arrizabalaga beyond this season.

Lunin has played 17 out of the 29 league games Madrid has played this season, and he has managed a 77% save rate and a 47% clean sheet rate, keeping eight clean sheets in the league so far.
