Leadership crisis rocks Sokoto PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Sokoto State is currently facing a massive internal crisis following a major decision from Abuja. The state chapter has officially rejected the dissolution of its executive committee by the party’s national leadership.

National headquarters recently issued a statement through the National Publicity Secretary, Jungudu Mohammed, declaring the immediate sack of the state leaders. The national body claimed the move was necessary to reposition the party within the state.

Caretaker committee takes over party affairs

In place of the dissolved executive, the national leadership announced a 15-member caretaker committee to manage party activities. Hayatu Tafida was named as the chairman of this new committee, while Ahmed S. Pawa serves as the secretary.

The national headquarters expects this new team to oversee the party’s transition and organize fresh congresses. However, this decision has met stiff resistance from the incumbent leaders who refuse to vacate their seats.

State chairman dismisses national leadership order

The embattled Sokoto State PDP Chairman, Bello Goronyo, has publicly dismissed the dissolution as unconstitutional and lacking any legal basis. He insisted that the state executive remains the only legitimate leadership of the party in Sokoto.

Goronyo argued that since they were duly elected into office, they cannot be removed by a simple administrative statement. He maintained that only a court of law has the authority to cut short their constitutionally guaranteed tenure.

Supreme Court battle looms over PDP crisis

The Chairman acknowledged that the party is already dealing with a leadership dispute at the national level. This broader conflict is currently pending before the Supreme Court for a final determination.

Despite these national distractions, Goronyo vowed that his team would continue to function in their various capacities. The situation has created a dual leadership structure that could further weaken the party’s influence in the state.
