Lawyer demands arrest of ex‑INEC chairman

A prominent human rights lawyer, Maxwell Okpara, has called for the immediate arrest of outgoing INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, accusing him of overseeing irregularities and leaving behind a legacy of poor leadership.

Critique of Yakubu’s tenure

Speaking in an televised interview, Okpara argued that Yakubu conducted elections improperly and should have been detained before leaving office. He said Yakubu’s direction to aggrieved parties to seek legal remedy betrayed confidence in his own decisions.

He went further, dismissing any honor conferred on Yakubu as misplaced, asserting that Yakubu “deserves the award for the worst electoral umpire in the world.”

Urgent call to action

Okpara said that in a functional democracy, anti‑graft agencies would have intervened and prevented Yakubu from exiting the country after his tenure. He urged authorities to ensure Yakubu is served and held accountable for his alleged misdeeds.
