Lassa fever: Adamawa reports four out of five negative cases
The Adamawa State Commissioner for Health, Felix Tangwami, has confirmed that four out of five suspected cases of Lassa fever has have come out with a negative result, Premium Times reports.
Tangwami said this in a new conference on Monday, March 4, revealing that the state admitted index cases on February 22, collected their samples on the 23rd and sent them for testing on the 24th.
He said the cases were admitted at Modibbo Adama University Teaching Hospital (MAUTH), and were sent to National Reference Laboratory (NRL) in Abuja for testing.
“The good news is that four results came back negative, while one was positive. The two patients from NYSC Camp Damare are still receiving treatment in MAUTH, Yola, and their prognosis is not too bad. We have also asked that the sample of the index patient be retaken and investigated for further verification,” Tangwami said
Tangwami called on the general public not to panic and just follow the instruction and advice of health professionals during sensitization gatherings.
“I also want to urge the public to promptly report any symptoms similar to that of Lassa fever to the nearest health facility,” he added.
The commissioner commended the contact persons for their cooperation regarding sample collection and isolation, saying the general public should follow in their footsteps when the need arises.
Tangwami then called on the public to take measures to protect themselves, including avoiding close contact in crowded places and excessive exposure to the sun.
