Lagos State disburses ₦2.7bn to support vulnerable households

Lagos State Government strengthens social intervention programmes
The Lagos State Government has disbursed a total of ₦2.7 billion under its flagship social intervention initiatives, EKO Cares and EKO Listens, reaching over 10,000 vulnerable households across the state.
The programmes are designed to provide financial assistance to residents in critical areas such as healthcare, housing, education, and small business development, irrespective of ethnicity, gender, or political affiliation.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu reiterated his administration’s commitment to poverty reduction and inclusive development during the presentation of ₦460 million in cheques to 1,000 new beneficiaries of the EKO Listens programme. The event, which took place at the LTV premises in Agidingbi, Ikeja, was attended by key government officials, with the Governor represented by Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Hamzat.
“This presentation is not just a ceremony; it is a celebration of compassion and our shared humanity,” the Governor said. “Progress is not only about infrastructure or numbers, but about how deeply we care for one another. Through initiatives like this, we strengthen the bond of trust between government and citizens.”
Impact of EKO Cares and EKO Listens programmes
Since their inception, the social intervention programmes have had a wide-reaching impact. EKO Cares has provided support to over 8,100 individuals, while EKO Listens has assisted more than 8,690 residents. In 2024 alone, ₦1.1 billion has been distributed to 2,477 beneficiaries, and an additional ₦1.6 billion is earmarked to support another 2,850 residents before the end of the year.
The programmes aim to empower vulnerable citizens and foster economic inclusivity across Lagos State. They provide practical assistance for families struggling with medical expenses, housing needs, educational costs, and small business challenges. By prioritising citizens’ welfare, the government seeks to strengthen social cohesion and encourage active participation in community development.
Alignment with national reforms and state agendas
Governor Sanwo-Olu also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his bold national reforms, describing them as a foundation for sustainable prosperity and economic growth. He encouraged Lagosians to remain patient and supportive of the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda, highlighting how state and federal initiatives can work in tandem to uplift citizens.
Selection process and focus on equity
According to Dr. Afolabi Tajudeen, the Special Adviser on Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, beneficiaries were carefully selected from a pool of approximately 5,000 applicants across all 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas. Women accounted for 46 percent of the recipients, reflecting the government’s commitment to gender inclusivity and empowerment.
Dr. Tajudeen further noted that the Governor had distributed food palliatives to over 2,000 vulnerable residents, including the elderly and persons with disabilities, highlighting the holistic approach of the programmes.
Digital engagement and civic education
The success of these social initiatives has been reinforced by technology and civic education. The CitizensGate Mobile App has connected over 500,000 users, including Lagosians in the diaspora, with the state government for feedback and service delivery. Additionally, the Civic Education Programme has engaged 7,888 students to promote civic responsibility, political inclusion, and awareness of government policies.
These efforts reflect Lagos State’s ongoing dedication to creating a more equitable and inclusive society, where citizens are empowered to participate actively in governance and benefit from social support mechanisms.
