Labour Party shuts down rumors of automatic ticket for Peter Obi, clarifies position

On Monday, May 26, the Labour Party (LP) made it clear there’s no automatic ticket for anyone hoping to be their presidential candidate, not even Peter Obi.
This came after Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, said at an event in Abuja that he might run again “for now” under the LP platform.
But the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiorah Ifoh, quickly responded to the buzz, saying the LP isn’t exactly celebrating that news.
“The attention of the leadership of the Labour Party has been drawn to the news trending in the media that the party is ‘celebrating’ that its candidate in the 2023 presidential election, Peter Obi has declared his intention to run on the platform of the party in 2027,” Ifoh said.
He made it clear:
“I want to state emphatically that I was quoted out of context and therefore, the impression conveyed by the news was erroneous, inaccurate and does not in any way reflect the position and mood in the party.”
Ifoh added that while the party isn’t against anyone running, including Obi, there’s a strict rulebook for how candidates get their tickets — and automatic tickets aren’t part of it.
He reminded everyone:
“Recall that at the party’s National Convention in 2024, the party had erroneously granted automatic tickets to our former Presidential candidate and the only governor of the party, however, that decision has since been rescinded and reversed after consulting the statute books.”
