Labour Party reaffirms commitment to field Peter Obi against Tinubu in 2027 elections

On Thursday, February 13, 2025, the Labour Party (LP) announced that it will field former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi as its candidate for the 2027 general elections. The party’s National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, made this declaration during an appearance on Politics Today, a programme on Channels Television.

Arabambi emphasized that President Bola Tinubu will face significant challenges in the upcoming elections. “Tinubu is not just going to have it very easy in 2027, we are coming back with that Peter Obi to them so that they will know we are very serious,” he stated.

The LP official also took aim at actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo, who recently resigned from the party. Arabambi dismissed Okonkwo’s exit as a relief for the Labour Party, claiming the actor’s loyalty was questionable and suggesting he had been working for President Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“We wish Kenneth Okonkwo well; his resignation is good riddance to bad rubbish. He should not speak about the Labour Party anymore,” Arabambi remarked. He further reassured supporters, saying, “There is no leadership crisis in the Labour Party. Labour Party is not going into extinction. It is just a figment of the imaginations of most of our detractors.”

In the 2023 general elections, Obi was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, finishing third behind Tinubu of the APC and Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Despite the loss, the party remains determined to challenge the current administration in the 2027 race.
