Kwara government issues bird flu advisory after outbreak in Kano
The Kwara State Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has issued an advisory to residents following a recent outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) in Kano State.
In a statement released by its press secretary, Omotola Ashaolu, the ministry assured that there are no confirmed cases of the disease in Kwara State at this time. However, to prevent any potential occurrence and protect both the poultry industry and public health, the ministry emphasized the need for proactive measures.
HPAI, a highly contagious disease, poses a serious threat to poultry, leading to high mortality rates, and can also affect humans. In light of this, the ministry has urged poultry farmers, bird handlers, and other agricultural stakeholders to take preventive steps, including:
- Strengthening biosecurity protocols to limit access to poultry farms,
- Regularly disinfecting equipment, tools, and facilities,
- Preventing wild birds from coming into contact with domestic poultry.
The ministry also stressed the importance of quickly reporting any suspected cases of bird flu. Residents are advised to remain vigilant for signs such as sudden bird deaths, respiratory distress, or a noticeable drop in egg production, and to contact authorities if they notice anything unusual.
Additionally, the ministry recommends that people handling poultry use protective gear such as gloves and masks, and avoid direct contact with sick or dead birds.
For further information or to report a potential case, residents can contact:
- Dr. Olugbon Abdulateef, Director of Veterinary Services, at 08033765024
- Dr. Aminu I.O., Chief Veterinary Officer, at 08160989312
The ministry called on everyone to follow these guidelines carefully to help prevent a potential outbreak and ensure the health and safety of the community. “By working together, we can protect Kwara State from this threat,” the statement concluded.
