John Momoh urges journalists to prioritise truth for national unity at editors’ convention

Veteran broadcaster and media entrepreneur, Dr John Momoh, OON, has called on Nigerian journalists to prioritise truth over sensationalism, stressing the need for the media to play a healing role in nation-building.
Speaking at the 2025 Nigerian Guild of Editors National Biennial Convention held on Thursday, June 26, in Enugu State, Dr Momoh emphasised that the media’s role extends beyond gatekeeping to shaping national conscience.
“Let’s remind ourselves that we are not just gatekeepers — we are builders of national conscience,” said the Chairman and CEO of Channels Media Group, addressing a packed audience of journalists, editors, and newsroom leaders from across the country.
The convention’s theme, “Building a Secure and Cohesive Nigeria: The Role of Dialogue, Inclusion and the Media,” was described by Momoh as both timely and necessary.
“This is not just a topic. It is a national conversation,” he said, as he carefully unpacked the key elements of the theme dialogue, inclusion, and media urging practitioners to reflect on their power to influence unity and healing in the nation.
He stressed the importance of inclusion in media coverage, urging journalists to give voice to those often overlooked in national discourse. “Nation-building is not just about unity it’s about empathy, and healing begins with being heard,” he stated.
Momoh’s remarks come at a time when Nigeria continues to grapple with polarisation, insecurity, and deep-rooted societal divisions. His address served as a rallying cry for media professionals to rise to the responsibility of promoting dialogue and bridging divides through ethical journalism.
