IGP, Governor Sanwo-Olu break ground for redevelopment of Ijeh police barracks
The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Thursday performed the groundbreaking ceremony for the redevelopment of the Ijeh Police Barracks in Obalende. The project aims to deliver 2,200 modern housing units for police officers and their families upon completion.
Speaking at the event, Governor Sanwo-Olu emphasized the state’s commitment to addressing the housing deficit and improving the welfare of security personnel. He noted, “Today is a day for our law enforcement officers because two of the activities that we are engaging in today are for their welfare and our collective security and safety of lives and property.”
The governor highlighted the historical significance of the barracks, which had provided shelter for decades but had fallen into severe disrepair due to aging structures and insufficient maintenance. The redevelopment, he said, symbolizes the government’s dedication to enhancing the quality of life for law enforcement officers.
Inspector General Egbetokun described the event as a major milestone in the Nigeria Police Force’s pursuit of modernization. “Today, we celebrate another chapter in our journey towards modernisation and excellence,” he said, expressing gratitude to Governor Sanwo-Olu, the Lagos State government, and other stakeholders involved in the project.
In addition to the housing initiative, Sanwo-Olu handed over 260 new patrol vehicles and other security equipment to the Nigeria Police Force and supporting security agencies, further underscoring the state’s commitment to public safety.
