Hugo Broos optimistic about South Africa’s chances of World Cup qualification

On Wednesday, March 26, Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos expressed confidence in South Africa’s strong position to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. With their recent victory in Group C, Broos believes his team is well-placed ahead of competitors such as Nigeria, Rwanda, and Benin Republic.

South Africa extended their lead in Group C on Tuesday, securing a 2-0 win over Benin Republic in Abidjan. This result brought their total points to 13, giving them a five-point lead over second-placed Rwanda. Nigeria, currently in fourth place, trails with seven points after Matchday 6.

Broos remains optimistic but cautioned his players to stay focused and avoid complacency. “We have to be confident and not be afraid of anybody that plays against us,” Broos told Sowetan Live. “The only thing we can do is to continue working hard like we’ve been doing. We must not think that everything is already done. We are already in a good position, but I think with the group that we are in, if we don’t do foolish things, we are very close to qualification.”

With five matches remaining, Broos is hopeful that South Africa can maintain their momentum and secure a place at the 2026 World Cup.
