How African athletes can leverage AI and technology to excel – Experts
Experts in sports development have discussed how African athletes can harness Artificial Intelligence (AI) and other innovative techniques to enhance their performance in competitions.
This took place during the Scientific Conference at the ongoing All African University Games (FASU), co-hosted by Lagos State University (LASU) and the University of Lagos (UNILAG).
Held at the LASU Main Campus, the conference featured experts from various African universities, emphasizing that African nations must embrace modern methods and stop lagging behind.
They highlighted the importance of collaboration among universities across the continent to share experiences and learn from each other.
Notable speakers included Prof. Vincent Onywera, Prof. A.R. Awopetu, Prof. Olawale Moronkola, and others. They discussed the significance of Emotional Intelligence in sports, noting that many successful athletes have struggled due to difficulties in managing their emotions.
Key topics included the need for localized research, funding challenges, and ethical considerations in research and AI.
Prof. Moronkola, Director-General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS) in Surulere, Lagos, led a panel discussing the importance of collaboration among various sports specialists, such as sports psychologists and nutritionists, to positively impact athletes’ training and performance.
Prof. Onywera, a Professor of Exercise Recreation and Sport Science at Kenyatta University in Kenya, addressed the role of AI in transforming sports. He noted, “We are now in the Fourth Industrial Revolution, characterized by Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and Big Data. These advancements are supported by research and innovation, and sports must not be left behind.”
He also expressed concern over the disappointing performances of African athletes in recent competitions, highlighting that countries like Nigeria returned from the Summer Olympics in France without a single medal. The experts concluded that by embracing modern technologies and fostering collaboration, African athletes can improve their chances of success on the global stage.
