‘Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo’ singer Mike Ejeagha gets street named after him in Enugu
In a heartwarming recognition of his contribution to music, the Enugu State government has named a street after 90-year-old highlife legend, Mike Ejeagha, whose 1983 record “Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche” recently went viral with its catchy “Gwo gwo gwo ngwo” refrain.
Governor Peter Mbah inaugurated the newly constructed roads and renamed Abakpa Road after Ejeagha, who hails from Imezi Owa, Eziagu Local Government of Enugu State.
The governor also visited Ejeagha at his residence, where he was received by his children, Emma Ejeagha and Elizabeth Ugwu (Nee Ejeagha), who appreciated the governor for fulfilling promises made by successive governments.
Ejeagha’s song, featuring the viral “Gwo gwo gwo ngwo” dance steps, tells the folklore story of the tortoise and elephant, showcasing his signature blend of morals, proverbs, and social commentary.
The song’s recent resurgence in popularity was sparked by comedian Brain Jotter’s video posted on Instagram on July 5, 2024, which renewed interest in Ejeagha’s life and career.
In a colorful moment, Governor Mbah joined in the viral “Gwo gwo gwo ngwo” dance steps at the street commissioning, delighting residents and celebrating Ejeagha’s legacy.
“We appreciate the governor for fulfilling the promises made by successive governments,” said Emma Ejeagha and Elizabeth Ugwu (Nee Ejeagha).
