Grok disables image creation for free users after deepfake backlash
Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok, has disabled its image generation and editing features for non-paying users following widespread backlash over the creation of sexualized deepfake images of women and children.
The decision comes amid threats of fines and growing international pressure on Musk’s platform, X, after reports emerged that users were generating explicit images, including depictions of undressed women and children in sexualized positions.
In replies to users on X on Friday, Grok announced that “image generation and editing are currently limited to paying subscribers,” adding that users must subscribe to regain access to the feature. The move means only users who provide credit card and personal information can now create or edit images using the AI tool.
Regulatory scrutiny has intensified, particularly in Europe. The European Commission this week described the images as unlawful and ordered X to preserve all internal documents and data related to Grok until the end of 2026. In the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said X “has got to get a grip of this,” noting that he had asked communications regulator Ofcom to consider all available options, while stressing that Britain would not tolerate such content.
Several other countries, including France, Malaysia and India, have also publicly criticized the platform over the issue.
Responding to the controversy last week, Musk said on X that anyone using Grok to create illegal content would face the same consequences as those who upload such material. X’s official Safety account later said the platform addresses illegal content by removing it, permanently suspending offending accounts, and cooperating with local governments and law enforcement when necessary.
