Governor Umo Eno signals possible defection from PDP, hints at growing ties to APC

In a politically charged yet carefully worded statement, Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has once again hinted at his potential departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), subtly signaling a shift toward the All Progressives Congress (APC) during a state banquet held in Uyo on Thursday, May 29, to mark his second year in office.

Though Governor Eno stopped short of formally announcing a party switch, his language left little doubt about his political trajectory.

“I respect our party, the PDP. I love the PDP. But we all know the way things are,” he said to a crowd of state dignitaries.

“So, whatever happens, wherever the journey of life takes me, I will always love you. We’ve built strong friendships, and we will always keep them.”

The governor’s remarks come amid increasing speculation of a defection, fueled by his visible alignment with President Bola Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, both of whom are senior figures in the APC. Despite his reluctance to explicitly name the APC, observers have noted his ongoing support for federal initiatives and personalities linked to the ruling party, particularly in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

“If you have anything to do, invite me—I will come. I will always be there. But it’s time to progressively move,” Eno continued.

“That again will not affect anything in this state. We do not govern based on political affiliations.”

A unifying tone amid a looming political shift

Governor Eno called for unity across party lines, asserting that governance should prioritize the welfare of Akwa Ibom people over political loyalty. He emphasized that his ARISE Agenda, the administration’s development blueprint, remains inclusive and people-focused.

“I would love to see all our party leaders seated together like this, across party lines. We must always put Akwa Ibom first. We know we have Akwa Ibomites in the PDP, APC, YPP, and IPAC.”

He concluded with a statesmanlike call for unity:

“Whenever anyone flies into Akwa Ibom, please drop your party tag and know you are flying into a united Akwa Ibom.”

Political observers weigh in

While Governor Eno has yet to make a definitive announcement, Thursday’s comments are his strongest indication yet of a possible defection from the PDP. Analysts believe that his growing rapport with APC leaders, coupled with mounting internal tensions within the PDP, could make a crossover imminent.
