Flooding blocks Makurdi–Lafia–Abuja road hours before Tinubu’s visit to Benue

Just hours before President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s scheduled visit to Benue State on Tuesday, June 17, the Makurdi–Lafia–Abuja highway was rendered impassable due to heavy flooding, leaving many motorists and passengers stranded.

According to DAILY POST, intense floodwaters overtook a key stretch of the road — a major corridor linking Abuja to Makurdi — disrupting traffic flow and forcing commuters to either postpone their journeys or seek temporary refuge in safer locations.

The flooding, caused by persistent rainfall, significantly complicated travel logistics ahead of the President’s visit, during which he was expected to sympathise with victims of recent deadly attacks in Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area, where over 300 lives were reportedly lost.

There has been no official word yet from federal or state authorities regarding the flood situation or any possible adjustments to the President’s itinerary.

The incident further underscores the fragile state of road infrastructure in the region and the growing vulnerability of communities to climate-related disruptions, particularly during Nigeria’s rainy season.
