FG hands ride-hailing drivers 50% off for CNG conversion
The Nigerian Federal Government has launched a new app and online platform for compressed natural gas (CNG) conversions, primarily targeting ride-hailing drivers. The app, available on Google Play and the Apple Store, provides real-time information on nearby conversion centers, allows appointment bookings, offers discounts, and gives fuel price updates.
The initiative, part of the Presidential CNG Initiative (PCNGI), aims to raise $25 million in its first phase, $75 million by the end of 2024, and $250 million by 2027 to build CNG infrastructure in Nigeria.
The program, focusing on the ride-hailing industry, intends to lower booking prices on services like Uber and Bolt through the RideShare CNG Conversion Incentive Programme. It also offers ride-hailing drivers a 50% discount on converting their vehicles to CNG using the new MY-CNG App.
NASENI, the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure, is managing the 50% discount for drivers who use the app. NASENI’s Executive Vice Chairman and CEO, Khalil Suleiman Halilu, emphasized that the app and incentive program reflect the agency’s commitment to using technology for national progress.
However, users have encountered issues with the app. During account setup, the app requests names as they appear on the National Identification Number (NIN), but it only provides fields for a first and last name, not the full NIN format which includes surname, first name, and middle name.
Additionally, there are problems with email verification. Despite the app claiming to send verification links, many users have not received them, preventing successful registration and login.
These issues were ongoing at the time of this report.
