The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the demolition and reconstruction of the Carter Bridge in Lagos.
The Minister of Works, David Umahi, disclosed this on Wednesday while briefing journalists at the State House in Abuja after the FEC meeting chaired by President Bola Tinubu.
Umahi said the council also approved N5.6 billion for advanced engineering consultants to handle the design and costing of the new bridge.
According to the minister, the decision followed consultations with stakeholders, which concluded that the bridge can no longer be rehabilitated.
“Recall that we have been to FEC and got approval after going through stakeholders’ engagements. The total recommendation was that Carter Bridge can no longer be rehabilitated; it should be demolished and then a new bridge constructed,” he said.
Umahi added that the reconstruction is part of broader efforts by the administration to strengthen critical transport infrastructure across the country.
He also revealed that FEC approved six major projects during the meeting, including highway reconstruction and upgrades across different geopolitical zones.
The minister said the council is targeting the commissioning of at least four completed projects in each zone by May 15.
“We are presenting a minimum of four completed projects in each zone for presidential commissioning by May 15. These are not palliative works; they are major infrastructure projects,” he said.
The Carter Bridge links Lagos Island to the mainland and serves as a major traffic corridor in the state.
