Ex-Liverpool star advises Ronaldo to consider retirement

On Friday, September 13, former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson urged Cristiano Ronaldo to contemplate retiring from football, suggesting he should consider stepping down at the end of the current season.

Lawrenson, now 67, believes that Ronaldo, who currently plays for Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr, should make the decision to retire by next summer, despite his impressive performances this season.

Ronaldo has continued to defy age by starting the 2024-25 campaign strongly, scoring four goals and providing two assists in four appearances across all competitions.

Lawrenson commented on the situation to Paddy Power via GOAL, stating, “Cristiano Ronaldo is still scoring in Saudi Arabia, but would he sign a new contract there? I’m not sure.”

He added, “This is when I think he needs a best mate who says, ‘You’ve had an unbelievable run, and maybe at the end of this season, just hang your boots up and let people remember you for what you’ve done.’”

Lawrenson expressed concern that Ronaldo might tarnish his remarkable legacy if he continues beyond this season, saying, “He doesn’t want to go through half a season where he scores something like six goals in the Saudi league.”
