Emergency rule: Fubara wrongly blamed for security issues – Report

On Wednesday, March 26, the Coalition of Human Rights Monitoring Group released a report clearing Governor Siminalayi Fubara of any involvement in the security issues that led to the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.
The report comes after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers on Tuesday night, citing a “greatly disturbed” political crisis in the state. In his speech, the President accused Governor Fubara of demolishing the State House of Assembly building.
As part of the emergency, Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, were suspended, along with all elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly. Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas was appointed Administrator to oversee the state’s affairs during this period.
Despite the emergency declaration, many Nigerians have criticized President Tinubu’s decision, questioning its legality and fairness.
The Coalition of Human Rights Monitoring Group, however, has strongly refuted claims that Governor Fubara has any ties to militant groups linked to pipeline vandalism and other security problems in the state. The report, which was unveiled during a press conference in Abuja, called the accusations “politically motivated fabrications” aimed at destabilizing Fubara’s leadership.
After a thorough investigation, the Coalition found no evidence of any financial or operational connection between Fubara’s government and militant groups. They also pointed out that several communities in Rivers State had come forward to deny the allegations, assuring the public that local oil and gas facilities remain secure and fully operational.
The report argued that the accusations against Fubara are part of a larger pattern of political instability in Nigeria, fueled by power struggles and rivalries. It also criticized Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for making statements that increased tensions in the state.
The Coalition called for an immediate stop to political hostilities, the withdrawal of security forces unlawfully deployed in the state, and independent investigations into the allegations of militancy. They emphasized that the people of Rivers State deserve peace, stability, and development, not a crisis driven by political motives.
“This report has carefully debunked the false allegations against Governor Fubara,” said the Coalition. “It is clear that these claims are part of a politically motivated effort to damage his reputation. Governor Fubara must be exonerated, not only to protect his integrity but to uphold the democratic values of Nigeria.”
The Coalition also condemned the inflammatory remarks made by Minister Wike, urging public officials to act responsibly and promote national unity. They expressed firm support for Governor Fubara and called on the international community to back Rivers State in its struggle for peace and justice.
